As a qualified Naturopath and Nutritionist I am asked what I eat to stay healthy on a fairly regular basis- it goes with the job! So I figured it was time to put together a guide of how and what I eat to maintain my health. And thats where Intermittent Fasting comes in, as it is an integral part of how I eat, along with eating a diet bursting with real, unprocessed foods.
But What is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent Fasting is simply the act of choosing to obstain from eating food for health (or spiritual) reasons. Fasting is something most of us do daily while we sleep, hence the word break-fast and intermittent fasting just uses various schedules to introduce more/longer periods of fasting into daily life in order to reap the well-established health benefits. There is no standard time to fast, as fasting is simply obstaining from eating food, so in effect every time you are not eating you are fasting. But there are known benefits to fasting over certain extended periods of time. In my mini guide I go into more detail about how I fast and why, just why it is so beneficial and how you can easily integrate it into YOUR life.
So just how does Intermittent Fasting improve our health?
The most well known and obvious benefit of fasting is weight loss, this can be clearly seen and measured if people follow a regular fasting schedule. When I first came to fasting I admit I was attracted by the fact I would (apprently easily) lose a couple of kilos, but it is the wide ranging health benefits that really interest me and keep me fasting on a weekly basis. Those amazing health benefits include:
- Increased energy
- Improved mental clarity and concentration
- Lowered blood sugar and insulin levels
- Reduction of inflammation (making fasting amazing for those who suffer with pain, autoimmune disease, asthma, collitis, Crohns disease, eczema, psoriasis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis…the list is endless as inflammation is the cause of most disease in the body!)
- Improved fat burning ability and weight loss
- Increased growth hormone, known as HCG, (for cell regeneration, growth and healthy human tissue including the brain and vital organs)
- Lower blood cholesterol
- Prevent Alzheimers disease
- Activate cellular cleansing by stimulating autophagy, which put simply means that our body gets a chance to clean out the old rubbish and renew cells, which also stimulates beneficial HGH release. The discovery of autograhy was recently awarded the Nobel prize for Medicine, cutting edge stuff. Fasting is such an easy way to incorporate this amazing Science and such an easy way to detox our bodies, naturally.
